If you're reading this piece, I implore you to start by listening to this song. Its about what you'd expect from a quality indie rock tune from 1993. Lyrics for the song are also posted below if you want to check those out. I find this song so addicting and fascinating because of Eric Bachmann(Archers of Loaf's frontman)'s claims that this love interest of his is both inferior and superior to him. It is likely that this statement reveals a sense of angst and self loathing in this scenario--Bachmann is telling himself this girl is inferior, despite his feeling that she is, in fact, the winner of the situation.
When listening to song, I have done a creative misreading of sorts, where I imagine a situation in which Bachmann's significant other is both inferior AND superior at the same time. This seems impossible at first, when comparing myself to people in my own life (as a result of this song), I found that I put myself on an even playing field with pretty much all of my peers. Changing lenses can paint a completely different picture of people. Even someone who is less accomplished, dumber, poorer, and has fewer friends might just be happier than me (which is arguably better than having everything else). This song has strangely given me perspective on how I look at people. If you find the right lens, the person you're looking at will always be better than you--or worse.
To wrap things up I just think its kind of silly to compare yourself to others. There is no winners or losers in life or even in conflict. It is most important to control what can be controlled, be grateful for what you have, and leave the rest up to God.
